The Filipino Department of Agriculture (DA) aims to export more farm and fishery products to Canada, by at least doubling the value in the medium term. Agriculture Secretary William Dar stated - “We wish to improve our balance of trade with Canada in succeeding years by selling more Filipino products.” Among the products he highlighted were pineapples, mangoes and melons.
Secretary Dar and Ambassador MacArthur mutually agreed to pursue and expand ongoing areas of agricultural cooperation and partnerships.
In 2019, the Philippines exported to Canada close to US$98.8 million of farm and fishery products. On the other hand, Canada exported in 2019 $192-millions worth of various food products.
“We are pleased to know that the first phase of adaptation trials of eight Canadian potato varieties in Natubleng, Buguias, Benguet province were completed, and the second phase will commence starting October,” Secretary Dar said.
