“Last year, we exported around 10 million avocados. This year, we expect to increase this to 15 million.” said Hilmi Sevilgen, the chairman of Alanya Avocado Producers’ Association. Chairman Sevilgen also announced the country’s production goals: “In 2020, we aim to produce 70 million avocados in Turkey”.
Last year, Turkey produced 50 million avocados. The increased demands for avocado was reflected in the increased production, Sevilgen emphasised.
This year, the production area in Alanya has grown to 4500 hectares. The city is responsible for more than 70% of the country’s avocado production.
“In the last few years, we exported avocados to Ukraine, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and Russia. We will continue to export to these countries. In the meantime, we continue to negotiate with a few more European countries. I think that we will expand our markets by adding 5 - 6 countries to our current markets,” said chairman Sevilgen.
Mehmet Zeybek, avocado producer for 20 years, said that they are content with the prices. “In Alanya, producers now grow avocados everywhere. I hope that our production areas will further increase in the future.” Said Zeybek.
