Onion production areas are widely distributed across China and the overall surface area devoted to onion plantation is still growing. China is already the largest onion producer among the four main onion producers (China, India, USA, and Japan) in the world. The main export markets for Chinese onions are in Japan, Korea, Russia, and Southeast Asia.

Onion farmers in Gansu recently began the new harvest season. The supply season will last until February or March next year. Gansu produces one of the largest volumes of onions in China, and the onions enter the market earlier than onions from other production areas. Furthermore, the product quality is stable, which makes this one of the most advantageous onion production areas in China. This year, while the entire country suffered from extreme weather conditions, the onion production volume in Gansu remained unaffected and the product quality is stable.

"We can say that the price did not fluctuate much in comparison with the onion price last year. Overseas market demand is extremely strong this year. We expect only small price fluctuations this year. We mainly produce onions with a diameter of 5-7 cm and 6-8 cm. We mainly export to Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and North America. Our main competition in the international onion market, according to our observations, comes from Dutch onions."
