Roberto Latorre, Carsol Europe:

"Good prospects for Peruvian blueberries"

The first Peruvian blueberries will arrive in larger volumes at Carsol Europe this week. "We've already had some arrivals, but from now on it's going to take on bigger forms," said Roberto Latorre. "The market conditions are looking good. The season is ending in Poland, which means there is room for the blueberries from Peru."

The weather conditions in Peru have been very favourable and as a result of the acreage expansion, the country expects to harvest about 40% more blueberries than last year, according to Roberto. "The great uncertainty is the impact of Covid-19. Fortunately, the fruit and vegetable sector is of paramount importance to the Peruvian government and products such as avocados have also come this way in large numbers, but how big the impact will actually be, remains to be seen. "

"There are plenty of pickers available in Peru, but many measures have to be taken to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Hopefully that will also translate into the sales prices", Roberto continues. CarSol has its own cultivation of blueberries from its plantations in Peru, Chile and Portugal almost all year round. The European sales office has a large part of the berries arriving in bulk. These are sorted at logistics service provider LBP in Maasdijk on the optical sorting machine that was taken into use last year and then packed according to the customer's wishes.

With the new line, the European sales office is able to meet the increasing demand for locally packaged berries. "We can handle large volumes. Our customers work directly with the source, but at the same time retain the flexibility that many retailers need locally. Our customers can easily switch contents per pack, place orders on a daily basis and receive fruit that can loading is sorted with our optical sorting machine. "

Carsol already had its own cultivation of organic blueberries in Chile and Portugal and is now also expanding its organic cultivation in Peru. "They are also busy testing new varieties. These tests are now entering the second year, but the results are promising."
