Chinese market price of Qingwang grapes from Yunnan shows signs of polarization

"The Qingwang grapes from Honghe in Yunnan enter the Chinese market every year in early May. The supply period continues until late August. This year is no exception. There have been frequent price fluctuations this season. And the price shows signs of polarization." This is according to Mr. Hao Bo of Honghe Qinyun Zhishang Agricultural Development Co., Ltd.

"Qingwang grapes are a type of Sunshine Rose grape. The natural environment in Jianshui county, in Honghe, is well suited for the cultivation of Qingwang grapes. The large temperature differences between day and night cause the grapes to accumulate fruit sugars, which makes these grapes extremely sweet. In addition, Jianshui has red soil that airs well, remains fertile, and drains rain water. That means the taste of the grapes will not change when the wet season arrives."

"The overall price of Qingwang grapes is lower than last year. There are two reasons for this development. First, the outbreak of Covid-19 slowed down distribution, which had negative short-term consequences for the freshness and product quality of grapes. Second, production areas suffered from exceptionally cold weather last winter, which had an effect on the product quality of grapes. The product quality is not uniform, as some vineyards suffered more than others. The overall price declined by 15%-25%, but the price of top-quality Qingwang grapes actually increased, because their supply volume is so limited. The price of poor-quality grapes, however, dropped even more."

"At the moment, we sell most of our Qingwang grapes under our own brand 'Qin Qin Craft Products'. We mostly sell our grapes in gift boxes. Chinese consumer power is weaker since the outbreak of Covid-19, and our offline sales volume has declined. We have shifted our focus from traditional retail channels to online orders."
