The Peruvian company Sunshine Export has concluded its mango campaign achieving a record figure in container shipping and a 66% growth over the previous years, despite the arrival of COVID-19 and the quarantine at the peak of the campaign, stated the company's general manager, Joaquin Balarezo.
Unfortunately, the good results obtained in the commercialization of mango contrast with the forecasts for the avocado campaign, which is just starting. "Avocado begins to produce from April to June and peaks in the last two months. We market a little fresh avocado but we mainly produce frozen avocado and it won't be a good campaign for frozen avocado,” he said.
Last year, the company built a second freezing tunnel to strengthen its mango and avocado production. However, it has only been able to use 40% of its production capacity due to the lack of personnel and the distancing measures implemented to contain the spread of the pandemic. In addition, the company's clients abroad, such as hotels and restaurants, have not been able to place orders because of the current situation. "We won't be able to achieve the growth potential we had because purchases did not take off," he stated.
Sunshine Export expects to close this year with sales of $ 40 million, while in 2009 it reported $ 34 million. This figure is supported by the increase in exports of fresh mango, despite the 15 to 20% decrease in prices caused by the increase in supply.
Frozen avocado and frozen mango prices remain steady. "We produce very little fresh avocado, but I understand that it will be a record year for exports and that prices have dropped," he said.
Regarding their investment plans, Balarezo said that they will focus on generating efficiencies in costs and expenses, but that they won't carry out any large investment project. They are currently working on experimental fields with 9 or 10 varieties that are expected to yield results in three or four years.
They are also analyzing the possibility of diversifying their production, for example with blueberries in the frozen segment. "We are not conducting any trials right now, but it is something that we will evaluate," he said.
