Using light metal rather than concrete for posts in orchards

Trellex makes poles for fruit production which combine longevity with stability and flexibility and recyclable, by bringing monetary return.

The choice of the support system for orchards and protection systems is generally depending on the factors stability and longevity. By choosing wood, someone is probable choosing the most stable option. But as known, with a big trade-off in terms of longevity. By choosing concrete, someone can be sure of a long useful life, but to the disadvantage of a reduced lateral load capacity, the high weight and the waste disposal costs. Jan-Willem van Giessen is aware of this, therefore he founded Trellex and started producing optimized metal posts in 2019. Van Giessen is absolutely convinced: "Because of the high customer’s benefit, in future metal posts will play an important role in fruit production and installing protection systems. Therefore, I have risked and invested with the clear goal to be the leader in this special market segment."

The advantages of metal
"The biggest difference between metal and concrete posts is the weight. Concrete posts for 1ha of orchard with anti-hail-net weighs about 26-30 tons. Trellex-posts weigh only approximately 6 tons. The low weight is leading to many advantages, starting with the transport, by loading four times the quantity of concrete and therefore saving transport costs. Further, the low weight is simplifying by much the handling during the distribution and the installation. Consequently, the installation performance rise and the costs decrease. Finally, the probably most important advantage: Metal is a resource! When the plant will be de-installed after its life cycle, the poles will have a substantial residual value. For concrete and impregnated wood farmers even nowadays must pay for the disposal instead."

Trellex uses only steel strips with the proven Magnelis®-Zinc-coat. The 250 grams coat consisting of zinc, aluminium and magnesium stands for high longevity. The octagonal section combined with 2mm material thickness on the pole of 95mm diameter and 1,5mm on 65mm of diameter is guaranteeing optimal stability. The special feature of Trellex is the inside-seam. By seaming the profiles, the zinc-coat is not compromised as it would be by welding. By having the seam inside, the poles can be planted with any orientation without limiting the installation of the accessories. Important is further the optional to get the post with a pointed foot end. By closing the bottom, during the plantation the poles gain more adhesion to the soil and later they show higher resistance to not be further pushed into the soil by vertical pressure.

"Clear, beside all the technical characteristics also the costs are facts to be considered. As a company we're aware of this. Thus, the production process has been optimized wherever possible. That is the reason why Trellex can serve the market with an unbeatable price-performance ratio!" van Giesen concludes.
