Good new potato campaign in terms of both volumes and prices

The new potato campaign is coming to an end in Campania. The season has been positive in terms of quality, yields and prices, as innovative cultivation techniques and the relative investments repaid producers with results beyond expectations. In order to conquer the markets, in fact, the focus must be on high quality, which can be obtained thanks to rational planning.

"The new potato market has changed thanks to the producers who opted for innovation in a segment traditionally not keen on experimenting," reports Vincenzo Bucciero, sales director at F.lli Bucciero Srl.

"Quality is good with excellent yields. Shelf-life has been great especially during the past few weeks characterized by warmer temperatures, so prices were also good. Usually, the combination of strong sun and high temperature damages the plants."

Patatì is the commercial brand of Fratelli Bucciero, a company founded in the 1970s in Maddaloni (Caserta) which produces, purchases and commercializes a vast assortment of products including potatoes, onions and garlic. Over the years, it managed to make up for the lack of domestic produce by importing around 70% of volumes mainly from France, Germany and the Netherlands.

The multiple types on offer include white, yellow and purple potatoes, which are available washed or unwashed.

"Our objective is to grow in order to better meet the needs of consumers and distributors but, mainly, to work on quantities so as to increase the commercialization of Italian produce. We are therefore working on an investment plan to double the production and enhance the storage and packaging systems. Results repay our producers of their efforts. They are learning that high-quality must go hand in hand with providing information."

The brand has focused on strengthening the potential of the domestic market and results are tangible. "Towards the end of the month, we will start commercializing new potatoes from Avezzano. Yields and quality are looking good. The produce from France will be ready in a few weeks' time."

Patatì branded products are sold by the leading domestic retailers and general markets mostly in southern Italy. "We do make a difference with Patatì, also because we guarantee products selected at origin that present unvaried organoleptic qualities throughout the year."
