Katrina and Tim Myers business, Barham Avocados, will appear on a segment of Channel 10’s My Market Kitchen, telling about the way they are trialling a retractable cover on half a hectare of avocados which will protect the trees from excessive sun, frost and wind.
Ms Myers said the greenhouse approach was expensive but they were interested in finding out if it could be justified in terms of improved yield and quality. The 400 Hass variety trees were planted out in November 2018, and they are hoping for a first crop within three years, which would be a year or two earlier without the cover.
The Myers pride themselves on being innovative and having an emphasis on sustainability and quality. They don't use pesticides and they focus on efficient water use, with the use of soil moisture meters. They are also part of a national network of avocado producers called the Avo Club, which can supply avocados to customers all year round
Horticulture Australia is sponsoring Channel Ten’s My Market Kitchen to showcase grower stories, their produce and the research-driven innovations and practices that growers use on farm to deliver healthy, nutritious and sometimes unique fruit, vegetables, and nuts to plates and lunchboxes across Australia.
