"Many production areas in China began to supply the market with fresh onions in April. Market supply far exceeded demand and the price dropped. Up until now, the low price has not been a stimulus for increased consumption. Onion farmers and traders are complaining loudly as the market shows no signs of improvement." This is according to Ms. Wang Mengli from Jilin.
"The onion price briefly increased in the last week of June, but the market is quite weak and the price dropped again. Of course, in addition to the impact of excessive supply, the onion price also suffered from pressure in both the domestic market and the export market."
"Our yellow onions and red onions come from many different production areas, including Henan and Shandong. The market conditions are slightly better for Shandong onions, especially when it comes to export, but their sales volume is still smaller than last year. The onion export price dropped by 10%-20%, based on different destination markets and onion varieties."
"We currently sell our onions through traditional sales channels as well as e-commerce platforms. Not only do we sell our onions in wholesale markets and supermarkets in first- and second-tier cities throughout China, we also export our onions to countries in Southeast Asia. We sell as much in the domestic market as we export."
