Mediane introduces Sealpap

Sealable, recyclable, repulpable specialty papers

Growers and packers of fresh produce know Mediane as a converter of flexible films for the packaging of herbs, lettuce and fresh produce. Mediane has been a market leader in the field of conical sleeves in Europe, USA and Australasia for many years already. Their product line also includes Peel & Reseal re-close packaging, Flow-pack and Top-seal laminated films and Flow-pack films with micro, macro and laser perforation. Mediane's conical sleeves, bags and films are on the shelf of all major retailers.

Sustainability is a key issue for Mediane. For this reason a full range of sustainable packaging alternatives was introduced some years ago under the name ‘Greensleeve'. This includes industrially compostable films, but also Home Compostable films (and laminates) as well as Green PE and paper. "We are exporting to over 50 countries with different views on 'waste management' and we have to adapt ourselves to these different market situations by offering a 'variety of sustainable solutions' rather than 'one size fits all", according to Robert van der Laan, General Manager of Mediane. "There still is no uniformity on the view of waste management. As an example, the waste management in the UK completely differs from France or Germany for that matter. Markets we are all serving with our films and conical sleeves."

The most recent investment of Mediane is in the field of paper converting machines. In a period of 12 months the company moved from converting flexible packaging films, into the printing and converting of paper. "This was a serious challenge" according to Robert van der Laan. “In the flexible packaging industry, we are used to working on high-speed printing and converting machines and when we decided to move our production to paper, it was a prerequisite that paper converting machines should be specially designed, built and constructed to our requirements in order to guarantee the same high output and quality-control and maintain a competitive advantage."

Mediane sees the market for paper sleeves and flow-pack paper packaging expanding further and the company is now fully prepared for that. In order to meet these challenges, Mediane developed a completely new coated paper called Sealpap which is the result of extensive coating, printing and trials with the objective to find the right packaging-medium which is perfectly sealable, recyclable and does not contain any plastics. The paper is FSC certified.

Sealpap was presented for the first time at the 2020 Fruit Logistica in Berlin which led to an overwhelming interest also for other applications. The Sealpap range of sealable papers is being extended and fine-tuned to meet all these different requirements coming from food and non-food companies. Sealpap performs well on vertical and horizontal packaging machines and is being tested for further very demanding packaging-applications in different fields of industry.

Sealpap can be supplied 1/s, 2/s coated or spot-coated. It is available in recycled kraft, white kraft or translucent paper for high-barrier flow packing (Sealpap-Crystal) It can be printed in up to 8 colors in high-definition flexo and various perforation options are available.
