Jean-Pierre Fabre, Armand Fabre:

“The watermelon market is difficult to penetrate”

There is a large offer on the watermelon market. The different producing countries, such as Greece, Italy, Tunisia, Morocco and Spain, are all in production. “With all these origins available, the market is difficult to penetrate,” explains Jean-Pierre Fabre, sales representative at Armand Fabre, an import-export company based in Marseille.

Armand Fabre currently offers Tunisian and Italian watermelons. “Those are big oval tiger watermelons, like the Moroccan watermelons, which have been available since April/May, and the Spanish watermelons, also very present. The market is almost saturated for this variety. Watermelons already are a difficult product to set up, and a cheap product, which does not make things any easier.”

Jean-Pierre adds that the only origin with a more differentiated offer is Spain. “Besides the round tiger watermelons, Spain also offers black round, green round, mini-watermelons and more.”

Armand Fabre markets watermelons from April until September.
