"The European market conditions for kiwifruit and apples are quite good this year. These fruits sell very well, because market demand exceeds market supply. The situation in China is quite the opposite, in particular for kiwifruit. The market price of domestic kiwifruit is rather low this season, which in turn puts pressure on the price of imported kiwifruit. That is why we do not export a lot of kiwifruit to China at the moment." This is according to Mr. Kevin Au Yeung, the Asia Market Manager at RKG Asia Co., Ltd.
"Our kiwifruit plantation is located in Piedmonte, Italy. We suffered from extreme weather conditions during the blossom season last year, which is why our production volume is about 20%-30% smaller than previous season. This reduction in supply volume immediately pushed the price up in Italy."
"In the end, green kiwifruit still sells very well in the European market. European consumers prefer to stay inside and order larger volumes of food while the Covid-19 pandemic continues. And consumer demand for green kiwifruit exceeds market supply."
"We did export a small volume of golden kiwifruit to the Chinese market this year. The market conditions are quite alright for golden kiwifruit, but the volume of green kiwifruit is limited, because the Chinese market price of domestic kiwifruit is quite low. Furthermore, the green kiwifruit is not as distinct as the golden kiwifruit. Consumers prefer the fruit that stands out."
