A middle-southern business owner commented on the situation

Italian retailers are after domestically produced lemons

"Large-scale retail chains are asking for high quantities of Italian produced lemons, in preference to those from overseas or other parts of Europe. In fact, buyers are preferring fresh, Italian quality lemons, to the point that they are willing to pay even more for the product" - explained an entrepreneur to FreshPlaza.

"So far, the consumption levels have been high, both because of the pandemic and the high temperatures, which have increased purchases. This is undoubtedly an interesting campaign with high demand and average prices, between EUR 1.20 and 1.50 per kg depending on the quality of the fruit, much higher compared to the previous year. Currently available on the national market are lemons from Sorrento IGP, Costa D'Amalfi IGP, Bianchetto, Verdello and Calabrian lemons."

"Because of the weather conditions during spring, some of the Campania region's areas this year saw a reduction in production of at least 70% compared to that of last year. This explains the price levels, at least for those products made in Campania,"  concluded the business owner.
