Australian Garlic Producers is using science to increase the success of its business. The company is Australia's biggest producer of fresh and processed garlic products. The Iraak-based company has more than 80 per cent of the national market.
The person behind the company's success, founder and industrial chemist Nick Diamantopoulos, is combining his passion for agriculture and science to produce the world's best garlic.
Mr Diamantopoulos spent 15 years working as an industrial chemist. He believes having not grown up with a farming background has proven an advantage.
"To grow garlic successfully on a commercial scale, we needed to conduct a lot of experimenting, a lot of trial and error and a lot of research and development."
"This was what I was qualified to do and slowly, through a process of elimination, we worked out what varieties to grow in Australia, how to grow the garlic well, how to maximise our yields, how to diversify into different growing locations and take advantage of Australia's diverse growing areas. We approach this business from a very technical perspective."
Knowing everything about each variety of garlic grown is critical to Australian Garlic Producers maintaining its competitive advantage.
Mr Diamantopoulos and his team painstakingly record every step of the process, using a bar-coding system to record and track the different stages of growing and production.
