Large volumes of avocados are arriving to the European market from Peru now. There was a short reduction in Week 23 with 485 containers, but in week 24 it went higher again with 600+.
“The market is under stress and free market prices are low,” according to Mirko Infantes from Pacific Produce. “We expect these big volumes to continue for a few more weeks until the extra volumes are cleared."
"There may have been some delaying effect from the Coronavirus outbreak, but overall a big season was expected, more in line with 2018 than with 2019.
The production at the moment is split between north and south of Peru, with abundance of small sizes from the former and big sizes from the latter. The north should be finishing almost entirely in a couple of weeks.
“Demand in the UK is solid because of the good weather and retailers are keen to promote avocados, the main issue is that the medium range sizing they prefer doesn’t go hand in hand with the big size offer from Peru.”
South African and Kenyan fruit is also still on the market.
