Rich supply of berries and summer fruits in German wholesale

"Moroccan and Spanish blueberries running out, cherries still available"

Slowly but surely, the domestic soft fruits are now increasingly coming onto the market, while the selection of summer fruits, such as cherries and melons, is also expanding. In general, one can see a rich supply of goods in both categories, reports the management of Fresh & Cash, based in Wuppertal.

Blueberry sales have gradually increased in recent weeks. "We now mainly sell Moroccan and Spanish goods, the supply of which will run out in about two weeks. After that, we expect the first arrivals from Germany and the Netherlands." Prices vary greatly depending on quality and sorting. Moroccan products are usually at a slightly higher price level."

Gooseberries: First arrivals from Belgium
In terms of volume, strawberries and blueberries have traditionally been bestsellers in German trade. However, other berry fruits, such as gooseberries, are now also gaining in importance. "This week we received the first gooseberries from Belgium. With a price per kilo of 4-5 euros, the goods are particularly inexpensive," Fresh & Cash comments. As expected, the first domestic batches will also be added in about two weeks.

Cherries: Rich offer
Meanwhile, the Wuppertal wholesaler is also involved in the marketing of summer fruit. "Cherries are available in abundance on the market. We mainly serve our customers with Spanish products, but we also offer Turkish and Greek products. Since this week we can also supply the first domestic products from North German cultivation."

Cherries are currently at a normal price level of around EUR 3-4/kg. "However, we expect prices to drop to around 2 euros/kg by the end of the month."

Melons: Spain scores best
The seasonal offer is rounded off with Spanish melons of all kinds. At present, Cantaloupe, watermelons, Charentais, Galia and honeydew melons are sold exclusively from Spain. "We have noticed that sales of watermelons and yellow honeydew melons are slightly ahead. In addition, we are focusing on special varieties from Turkey, such as Kirkagac, which are also well received."
