The rains registered in Colima have caused a decrease in the production of pitahayas in municipalities such as Piscila, where the harvest was half as big as in the previous year, stated Enrique Garcia, a producer.
"The plants started to flower in April. In other years, they already have pitahayas by April. In addition, many plants lost all of their flowers," he said.
This decrease in production represents a great economic loss for the community of Piscila, which has specialized in the production of pitahayas for many years. According to Garcia, in 2019 they would obtain up to 500 pesos a day, and now they only earn 200 pesos.
"Before, we could harvest up to 300 pitahayas from a plant, but now there is nothing, only my plants are bearing fruit."
Garcia said that, anticipating the shortage of this fruit, a few years ago he had planted on his property more than 140 pitahaya cacti, which are starting to give pitahayas.
