The Raf tomatoes from Vegacañada, the Almería-based tomato specialist of Grupo Agroponiente, have reached record prices in the auctions held so far in June. On Thursday 4, the price paid at origin for these tomatoes reached an unprecedented 9.2 Euro, and the day's remaining batches didn't fall below 8.4 Euro per kilo.
These are truly outstanding prices for June, a month when this product's supply is traditionally scarce and the quality standards don't reach a high enough level to make this price possible.
In any case, these prices show continuity with respect to those reached in the Vegacañada auction in recent months, especially in May, although then they didn't exceed 8 Euro as a general rule.
In May, Vegacañada has been the company with the highest volume of Raf tomatoes marketed in the Vega de Almería, with 897,596 kilos, which is over 60,000 kilos more than the variety's second largest marketer. The average price was also the best in the area, with 1.36 Euro per kilo, which is 0.38 Euro more than the second best.
The Raf tomato campaign will not last more than another two weeks, given the product's seasonality and the company's firm decision to only market the product when it meets optimal quality standards.
