On Friday, June 5, Colombia sent a new shipment of Hass avocados to Japan. The 19-ton shipment left the Port of Buenaventura for Yokohama. This is the second shipment of this fruit to Japan after the country shipped 16.1 tons of this product to that destination by April.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism, the fruit is being exported by the Westfalia Fruit Colombia company. The Japanese market was opened to this fruit in 2019, thanks to the work of the Ministries of Commerce, Industry, Tourism, and Agriculture, the ICA, ProColombia, and the Embassy of Colombia in Japan. These 19 tons are part of a total of 170 that the company will send until the end of July to that destination.
In the first quarter of the year, Japan imported avocados for 49.1 million dollars. In 2019 it's avocado purchases amounted to nearly 240 million dollars.
The Vice Minister of Foreign Trade, Laura Valdivieso Jimenez, celebrated this operation. Despite the pandemic affecting the world, Colombia has maintained the flow of foreign trade operations.
It should be noted that the country exported $ 49.4 million in the first four months of the year, i.e. 21% more than the 40.8 million in the same period of last year.
