Strawberry producers in Silifke, Mersin, a city located in southern Turkey, have started the second harvest which will continue until the end of June. The price of strawberries ranges from 7.5 to 8.5 Turkish Lira (0.98 to 1.1 Euro).
Due to bad weather conditions, the yields are a little lower this year. Therefore, producers have difficulty meeting the demands.
Atayurt Wholesalers Association's chairman Ali Turer stated that they are responsible from 65% of Turkey's strawberry exports and 35% of Turkish strawberry production.
"This season, we expect to harvest 60.000 tons of strawberries from an area of 1500 hectares. Some will be consumed domestically and some will be exported mainly to Russia and Iraq. Strawberry is an important source of revenue for the district. 3.000 families earn a living from strawberries," Turer said.
Atayurt neighbourhood ranks first in strawberry production in the area. This is followed by Arkum, Atakent, Kurtulus, Bahcekoy, Sokun and the Celtikci neighbourhoods.
