Pascal Bassols, Agro Sélections Fruits:

“This week, we are harvesting our first apricot, peach and nectarine varieties”

This year, the first apricots arrived 5 to 7 days early, and even 10 days early for some producers. In a context where harvest predictions have varied quite a lot from one producing area to another, Pascal Bassols, in charge of arboriculture development, is relatively confident about the Agro Sélections Fruits varieties.

“Many producers are disappointed with their harvest because of the bad weather, the recurring rainfalls and hailstorms, together with the particularly mild winter. But for us, the harvest of our varieties started on Tuesday and is looking good. The trees are full and the quality is satisfactory. We have had a lot of sun over the past two weeks, which helps increase sugar levels.”

Just like the apricots, the peach and nectarine varieties of Agro Sélections Fruits also arrived one week early. The harvest of the first flat peach varieties started last Friday.”

The overall peach quality seems to be better this year in France than the quality of the nectarines. “According to the producers, a certain volume of nectarines might be harvested with marked skin, although the fruits are not fully ripe yet. There have been a number of weather incidents and diseases, with an earlier pressure from aphids and thrips especially. So this year, the more sensitive varieties might be affected more. But overall, it is not a bad year in terms of production volumes in France.”
