The cherry campaign is in full swing with produce from southern and central Italy as well as from the Verona area. Prices currently depend on quality and grade.
"Grade is a determining factor, but it is not the only thing that matters, as cherries also needs to taste good. Over the past few days, the best Extra batches were sold at a wholesale price of €6 but, of course, not all cherries reached this level," explains wholesaler Giampiero Valdinoci.
Most quantities have been selling at €4/kg, which is not too bad when quantities start to become significant. "Processing, packaging and organoleptic qualities count a lot as well. When considerable quantities start to become available, the best produce always manages to sell well."
In this post lockdown period, the lack of demand by the H&R sector is making itself heard. This channel often absorbs the produce sold at a more affordable price, which is currently sold at €2/kg as grades are smaller and the appearance is not perfect. The lack of the great tourist flows is also slowing down sales.
