Early-mid July first German winter onions & increased demand expected

"At the moment, demand for onions is slightly declining"

At the beginning of the Corona-crisis, potatoes and onions were among the most sought-after products for hoarding on the market. While the potato sector is currently struggling with a sales crisis, sales of onions have also gradually come to a standstill. "At Whitsun, sales have been average to weak,"said Ismail Gündal, onion trader at the Karlsruhe wholesale market.

At the beginning of the Corona pandemic, large quantities could be delivered to the food retail trade, but in the meantime, sales have returned to normal, says Gündal. "At the moment the demand is slightly declining. Most of the goods are purchased from New Zealand via Holland. We are expecting the first winter onions from German cultivation at the beginning to middle of July. As soon as regional produce enters the market, sales usually increase rapidly."

Ismail Güldal during FreshPlaza's visit to the wholesale market in the  winter of 2018. The wholesale prices for yellow onions are currently at €1.50-1.70 /kg.

Onion mix: a long-lasting sales hit
Over the years, the classic wholesaler has specialised in the sorting, repackaging and marketing of onions. The trademark of the company is the hand-selected onion mix from its own production. "We pack yellow, red and white onions calibre 40-60 in a kilo bag for regional trade. As usual, even in these times of Corona, this is well received."
