After the recent opening of the Chinese market to Colombian Hass avocados, the country has already sent its first shipment to this new destination. This first shipment, which is made up of 23 tons of Hass avocado from the Cartama company, is expected to arrive in the Asian country on June 28.
“It is an achievement for the country and for our producers, which have more and more markets for Hass avocado. The ICA has been accompanying producers giving them technical support to guarantee they fruit complies with export requirements,” the general manager of ICA, Deyanira Barrero Leon, stated.
The ICA enabled a safekeeping area in the port of Buenaventura, from where the first shipment destined for Shanghai was dispatched, after having carried out the necessary inspection on May 25 and 26 at the packing plant, located in the municipality of Guatica, Risaralda.
In 2019, Colombia exported 44,570 tons of Hass avocado (48% more than in 2018), worth 89,000 dollars. The main export destinations were the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Spain, Belgium, and the United States, which together accounted for 92% of total imports. The remaining eight percent was exported to France, Curaçao, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Costa Rica, Aruba, Panama, Germany, Russia, Portugal, UAE, Hong Kong, Sweden, and Argentina, among other destinations.
The department of Antioquia is the main exporter in Colombia, with an estimated area of 5,545 hectares planted. It is followed by Risaralda with 1,402 hectares. Hass avocados are also grown in Caldas, Quindio, Valle del Cauca, Tolima, Cundinamarca, Cauca, and Santander.
