The UK and Germany reduced their melon imports, while Spain's increased

In 2019, both the United Kingdom and Germany reduced their melon imports compared to the previous year, according to data from COMTRADE, the Statistics Division of the United Nations (UN).

British importers bought a total of 172.82 million kilos of melons in 2018, while in 2019, that volume fell by 4.74%, down to 164.62 million kilos. At the same time, German melon imports dropped by 6%, from 137.49 million kilos in 2018 to 129.23 million kilos in 2019.

For its part, Spain continues to increase its melon imports, having gone from 86.55 million kilos in 2018 to 94.53 million kilos in 2019; an increase of 9.22%.

The largest importers in terms of volume
The total volume of melons imported in 2019 reached 2,084.37 million kilos. The United States led the world's imports, with 590.98 million kilos; 28.35% of the total. It was followed by the Netherlands, with 225.19 million kilos (10.80%), and France, with 174.52 million kilos (8.37%).

In fourth place is the United Kingdom with 164.62 million kilos (7.9%), followed by Canada with 142.16 million kilos (6.82%), Germany with 129.23 million kilos (6.2%), Spain with 94.53 million kilos (4.53%), Portugal with 61.36 million kilos (2.94%), Belgium with 40.03 million kilos (1.92%) and Italy with 40 million kilos (1.92%).

Amounts paid by each country
The world's melon imports in 2019 were worth 1,583.93 million Euro.

The United States imported melons worth € 344.11 million (€ 0.582 / kg), the Netherlands spent € 174.94 million (€ 0.777 / kg) and France paid € 166.73 million (€ 0.955 / kg).

The United Kingdom imported melons worth € 141.04 million (€ 0.857 / kg), Canada paid € 89.12 million (€ 0.627 / kg), Germany, € 120.6 million (€ 0.933 / kg), Spain paid a total of 70.12 million Euro (€ 0.742 / kg), Portugal spent 34.56 million (€ 0.563 / kg), Belgium paid € 43.97 million (€ 1,098 / kg) and lastly, closing the Top 10, Italy imported melons worth € 35.71 million (€ 0.893 / kg).

Suppliers
The United States bought 281.88 million kilos of melons from Guatemala, 166.41 million kilos from Honduras and 97.87 million kilos from Mexico.

The Netherlands imported 83.39 million kilos from Brazil, 56.64 million kilos from Spain and 33.92 million kilos from Costa Rica.

France imported 122.13 million kilos from Spain, 39.81 from Morocco and 3.73 million kilos from Senegal.

For its part, the United Kingdom bought 54.94 million kilos from Brazil, 52.91 million kilos from Spain and 17.61 million kilos from Honduras.

Germany imported 75.17 million kilos of melon from Spain, 20.47 million kilos from Brazil and 11.45 million kilos from Costa Rica.

Lastly, Spain bought 66.4 million kilos from Brazil, 12.32 from Senegal and 5.28 million kilos from Morocco.
