Significant growth of Egyptian fruit and veg exports to Europe

Despite the global coronavirus pandemic, Egypt's fruit and vegetable exports have increased. The demand for Egyptian products in European countries is on the rise, as reported by the Vegetables and Fruits Division, which confirmed that the Egyptian production has started to invade European markets, especially citrus fruits, garlic and onions.

Hatem Al-Najeeb, deputy head of the Vegetables and Fruits Division of the Chamber of Commerce in Cairo, said that in recent days, large quantities of vegetables and fruits have been exported to European countries. According to official statistics released by the Ministry of Agriculture, from the start of the export season and up until May 17, the total volume amounted to 2 million 160 thousand tons, with the main crops being citrus fruits, potatoes and onions.

Al-Najeeb also said that despite the increase in the export rate, most varieties have seen prices drop by between 20 and 30% with the end of the holy month of Ramadan, explaining that economic reform measures have contributed to lowering prices.

Al-Najeeb stressed that the vegetable and fruit market has not been affected by the coronavirus crisis, as most varieties are available and at reasonable prices.
