Stefano Pezzo:

"Production is good, we are waiting for the most sought after varieties"

The cherry campaign in Veneto started very well, as Stefano Pezzo of the Bragantini - Cherry Passion company explains. "We noticed that the larger sizes are the ones that get the best prices, and it is not new. This year, unfortunately, most of the product so far has a not too big, just average in size. The quality, however, is good".

At the moment the Adriana, Giorgia and Duroncino varieties are being collected. Next week the More, one of the best varieties, will start being collected.

"From the organoleptic point of view, More are very much appreciated. They have a high Brix degree and a crunchy peel, with a juicy pulp. It is the typical cherry of our area. We start the harvest in early June and we will continue throughout the month".

At the moment, the cherry harvest in Veneto is characterized by a good production, with normal yields and an average caliber. The quality is good. From a commercial point of view, the Italian market is the one that absorbs the most product, but there is no lack of exports to Scandinavian countries, Germany and Austria. "Unfortunately, for some years now we have lost part of the English market, in which Spain now dominates. However, the national cherry sector has strengthened in the domestic market, and thus imports from Spain, Greece and especially Turkey are decreasing".

At the end of the season the harvest will take place in the mountain area, not only in Veneto but in other areas such as in Trentino as well. In the highlands, one of the most popular varieties is Kordia, which is part of the range in the late period.

Stefano Pezzo.

"The season started fairly well - Pezzo concludes - unlike 2019, when in May the rain damaged most of the production. Now the hope is to continue like this and to do even better".
