"Consumer behavior in China changes after COVID outbreak"

Over recent months, fresh produce e-commerce in China has taken off. Whether it’s for large e-commerce companies or small and medium-sized community-based group-buy platforms, both the speed and volume of sales have increased enormously.

Ocityinfo is a community-based group-buy e-commerce platform that offers online fresh food group-buy and delivery services for 100 communities around Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. "The COVID-19 outbreak that lasted for nearly three months has changed consumers' purchasing behavior. In January when the virus broke out, although the city was not yet locked down and shops were not closed, many residents were reluctant to go out and do grocery shopping out of cautiousness. We had to cut down our Spring Festival holiday days and resumed business in advance to cope with a flood of orders,” the company's manager Cui said.

“Online consumption activities have been much higher recently. From January to February, volume distributed on our platform increased by 40-50% from the normal level. The outbreak has been eased since mid-March, but our online order volume remains stable at a high level,” Cui said. “Another trend brought by the outbreak is that small and medium-sized e-commerce companies have introduced more products in order to meet all consumer demands for fresh produce."

“Currently, imported fruits are in a transitional period. This, on top of the impact of the global pandemic overseas, has resulted in a decline in the variety and volume of fruit imported. Therefore, fruit offered by our platform are mainly grown in China. This season, lychees from Hainan are abundant and prices are slightly lower than in previous years, with the wholesale price of about 80 yuan/carton (11 kg) in Shenyang presently. On the contrary, due to the small volume of cherries imported from South America this season, market demand for local cherries has increased, resulting in a slightly higher price than the same period last year. The current price of cherries from Dalian ranges from 30-50 yuan per half a kilo."

“To follow the overall trend of the rapid development of e-commerce, we have recently upgraded our own platform. On top of ordering and delivery services, we have also introduced live streaming and community sharing functions, hoping to get closer to residents and drive consumer consumption."
