New potatoes hit Spanish supermarket shelves

The Valladolid-based Patatas Meléndez, leading company in the fresh potato sector, has launched its domestic new potato campaign. The early potatoes are already available to consumers through its whole retail distribution network (supermarkets and its own online store).

The 2020 harvest has so far been a good one. This is partly to thank to the April rains, which despite delaying the harvest, have also led to an increase in the production and to an improvement in the quality. The new potatoes of April and May have been supplied by the Region of Murcia and Andalusia. From July and until October, the harvest of new potatoes will take place in Castile-León, the autonomous region where Patatas Meléndez is based.

R+D+i and sustainability
Patatas Meléndez's focus is on quality, and to achieve it, it has an Agrarian Plan in which the professional relationship with producers is the most important aspect. The constant advances in R+D+i have allowed the development of two potato crops in southern Spain that make it possible to have Spanish potatoes every year in February. It is a clear commitment to potatoes in Spain and to our producers; an area in which the company continues making progress.

Patatas Meléndez selects the varieties with the best culinary uses: frying, cooking, garnish... The Agria, Soprano, Colomba, Sunita or Jazzy are the varieties that best adapt to consumer tastes. These are made available to producers, and with our rigorous work in the field, we obtain the best potatoes on the market in Spain.

All guarantees and precautions against COVID-19
The harvest and distribution of new potatoes from Patatas Meléndez is being carried out adhering to all security measures against COVID-19.

Company employees, partners, shippers and other workers have taken extra precautions since this health crisis started. Keeping safety distances and the use of PPE, masks and gloves have become normal, and the entire value chain has been adapted to the new situation. Safety comes first.
