The melon and watermelon campaign starts in Almeria with an increase in prices at origin

The melon and watermelon campaign started last April and its average prices in origin were higher than in the previous campaign. Some melon and watermelon varieties started slightly later than usual.

According to data offered by the Observatory of Prices and Markets of the Junta de Andalucia, the watermelon campaign started on the week of April 13 with an average standard price of 0.53 euro per kilo, as prices ranged from 0.5 euro for mini watermelon and 0.67 euro for black watermelon.

These varieties and the striped watermelon had a better start to the season in 2019 averaging 0.61 euro per kilo in the same reference week, but their behavior was more irregular. During the first month of trading in 2019, the average price per kilo of watermelon stood at 0.42 euro experiencing a decrease in the last week of up to 34 cents; i.e. nearly 35% less than in the same week of 2020.

This season, watermelon prices increased during the first week of May when the average price of all varieties stood at 0.57 euro per kilo, ranging from 0.54 euro for the mini and streaky varieties and 0.69 euro for black watermelon.

The start of the melon season has been more irregular and late. The average price of the first quotes achieved by the Galia and Piel de Sapo varieties in the week of April 13 was 0.73 euro per kilo, i.e. 9 cents more than in the same week of 2019.

The average price of these two melon varieties in the last three weeks of April of 2019 was 0.58 euro per kilo and in the same period of 2020, it was 0.74 euro per kilo.

According to the data analyzed by the Territorial Delegation of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Sustainable Development, the estimated area devoted to melon in the 2019-2020 season will be 2,650 hectares, i.e. 2% higher than in the previous campaign. Meanwhile, the area for watermelon will stand at 10,600 hectares, 1% higher than in the last campaign.

More than 589,000 tons of watermelon and almost 121,000 tons of melon were produced in the 2018/19 campaign. The biological control surface for watermelon and melon crops is expected to stand at 1,050 hectares and 530 hectares, respectively.
