The price of fresh Chinese garlic continues to fall

The price of fresh garlic has been affected by the poor conditions in the garlic industry last year. Many farmers suffered financial losses. And they expect the price to remain low this year. However, perhaps the low price in 2020 can become a business opportunity. The early-season garlic from production areas in Henan is currently entering the market in large volumes. The average price of fresh garlic is now around 0.60-0.80 yuan [0.08-0.11 USD] per 0.5 kg. Farmers in the Sumu area of Qi county, Henan, show very little enthusiasm for the activities required to dry and process fresh garlic.

The price of fresh garlic began to fall as soon as fresh garlic entered the market. This is on the one hand because the price of old garlic from storage is very low, which drags the price of fresh garlic down. On the other hand, the fresh garlic on the market is not very ripe and therefore not ready to be processed as garlic cloves or garlic slices. In addition, many farmers consider it a waste of effort to dry garlic. They prefer to sell the garlic fresh. According to people in the industry, the atmosphere in the garlic market is not the same as in previous years.

The weather conditions changed frequently this year. The temperature suddenly jumped to 30℃ and higher around the first of May. The high temperature held for two days and was then suddenly replaced by a cold current. Rain began to fall and the temperature then dropped below 10℃. The effect of these changing weather conditions on the production volume of garlic is still unclear.

The lack of enthusiasm in the garlic industry is most likely a temporary phase. As fresh garlic begins to mature, the market is likely to warm up again.
