"More Chinese consumers become familiar with pepino fruit"

The pepino is a relatively novel and characteristic fruit in the Chinese market. The fruit is considered a minor fruit and the overall surface area devoted to pepino plantation is relatively small.

At the moment only production areas in Yunnan and Gansu grow pepino. Bi Xiaoyan of Minqin County New East E-commerce Co., Ltd. recently analysed the Chinese pepino market: "The pepino harvest season starts in January and continues until August. Our sales suffered from the outbreak of COVID-19 but in the end the impact was limited. We still continue to deliver our fruit every day and the overall sales volume is more or less the same as last year. The product quality is excellent, which is the result of improvements in plantation technology. We continue to expand our market and develop new pepino varieties to provide Chinese consumers with an excellent experience."

"There is a strong market demand for pepinos, and market competition is fierce. Our pepinos come from Minqin in Wuwei, Gansu. Yunnan also supplies pepinos, but this does not threaten our sales. The production season in Yunnan and Gansu are staggered. Yunnan produces pepinos in autumn and winter, while Gansu produces pepinos in spring and summer. The current price is around 4 yuan [0.56 USD] per 0.5 kg. We mainly sell our pepinos online and in the market."

"The pepino is a minority fruit and in the last few years only a small number of consumers was familiar with this fruit. Now, however, the conditions are improving. We have been selling pepinos for more than 5 years now. We are happy to see that the pepino receives more attention and recognition from Chinese consumers. The pepino has a relatively low sugar content, but still has a faintly sweet flavor. In the summer we also supply Huangjin honey melons and in the autumn we sell Huaniu apples. Our market strategy is to produce characteristic local fruit in large volumes and sell them widely."
