The volume transferred by Chilean ports increases in 2020

According to a report by the Chilean Maritime and Port Chamber (Camport), during the first quarter of 2020, the volume transferred by the ports of Chile reached 30.5 million tons, i.e. 5% higher than in the same period of the previous year. However, the value of cargo fell by 12.1% amounting to $ 26,463 million.

Exports
During the first three months of this year, the total cargo exported totaled 16.3 million tons, i.e. 1.17 million tons more than in the same period of 2019.

The export value totaled 15.752 billion dollars, i.e. 1.744 billion lower than in the last period. Shipments of apricots, cherries, peaches, and plums decreased by $ 306 million.

Imports
During the first three months of the year, the total cargo imported amounted to 14.2 million tons, which is 426,052 tons or 3.1% more than in 2019.

The import value stood at 10.711 billion dollars, i.e. 1.902 billion or 15.1% less in the same period of the previous year.

Ports
85% of all the cargo traded in the first three months of 2019 and 2020 were mobilized through the Chilean ports of Caldera, Coronel, Huasco / Guacolda, Lirquen, Mejillones, Patache, Patillos, Puerto Angamos, Quintero, San Antonio, San Vicente, Talcahuano, Valparaiso, and Ventanas.

Meanwhile, the ports that presented an increase in their activity in the first three months of 2020, with the exception of the port of Huasco (because it was not operating for several months due to an accident), are Caldera, Mejillones, Patache, San Vicente, Talcahuano, and Coronel, which increased their transfer by 10% on average. The ports that decreased their activity are the ports of Lirquen, Angamos, Quintero, Valparaiso, and Ventanas.

The ports that had a greater variation in tons exported were the ports of San Vicente and Ventanas. The Port of San Vicente registered a 37.9% drop in its export volume, while the Port of Ventanas registered a 38.8% decrease.

The ports that had the greatest variation in tons imported were the port of San Vicente, which imported 546,000 tons or 67.6% more than in the previous year, the port of Valparaiso, which imported 222,000 tons or 20.3% less than in the previous year, and the port of Quintero with a drop of 315,000 tons or 15.3%.
