The melon season is in full swing now in China and more melons are expected to reach the market this month. However, some seasons are already ending, as is the watermelon season in Jinan. David a Fuxi watermelon seller from Jinan explained how their season went. "This year was quite different from other years. The COVID-19 took place during our planting period, a lot of cities were closed down and therefore a lot of workers were unable to show up and help with the harvest and the production of watermelons. Therefore this year the output is lower than last year. I estimate that the total production declined by more than half compared to last year."
"Due to the limited yield this year, the price is also a bit higher than last year. This year the price is around 18 yuan per kilo, while last year this was around 15 yuan. Even though there was a higher price, the market was not that good this year. Because of the virus, the sales were slow and did not improve that much later in the season. Furthermore, this watermelon is usually exported, but because of the virus this year, there was no export, which also put more pressure on the market."
As David explained, the season is now also coming to its end, as it always starts in March and continues till the end of April. The few watermelons that are left are sold in the Jinan wholesale market. For next year they have bigger plans. "We want to see to export our watermelons. This variety is special with its yellow flesh inside and its high value of selenium, which is very good for your health. It is a well-known watermelon in Jinan and we hope to bring this high-quality water melon to other places around the world."
