The first weeks after the Corona measures were implemented in Europe, most were hoarding specific fruit and vegetable products. The pineapple did not belong to that category. "The market has been really bad for a long time, while normally the months between January and April are, generally speaking good months for pineapples," says Mario de Goede of Dutoit Europe.
Where in other years the pineapple market shows a downward trend in the run-up to summer, the market has just recovered. "I think most importers are only bringing in what's on their agenda and nothing extra. As a result, the market is currently quite good with prices around 10-11 euros," the importer notes.
"Hopefully these prices can last a while, because with these prices it is of course very tempting to import more. An advantage is that the catering industry is carefully starting up again. Pineapples are widely used by caterers and restaurants, and hopefully this will create some extra demand."
