The asparagus campaign in the district of Fuentesauco, Zamora, is currently in full swing. Angel Corrales, the largest producer of asparagus in the region with 22 hectares, producers is facing great uncertainty in this campaign as a consequence of the closure of the hospitality industry, which has compromised the sales of many products.
Despite this, the activity on his farm is frenetic, in the field, and in the warehouse; some workers harvest the asparagus, while others select it, clean it, package it, and label it. "90% of the product goes to Mercamadrid and from there it's sent to all of Spain and abroad," Corrales stated. In addition to Mercamadrid, this industry has contracted an agency to deliver the product at home, mainly in Zamora and Salamanca.
Producers are compensating the losses they've had due to the closure of the hospitality industry by making exports to France, the Netherlands, and Germany. "Despite the health crisis, sales are going well, and prices remain stable," stated Corrales. "The strongest fall took place in April, but we are confident that everything will soon normalize."
Corrales' farm ships out 1,500 to 2,000 kilos of white and green asparagus a day, which will translate into around 130,000 kilos at the end of the campaign. According to the farmer, the production of this campaign is extraordinary and has very good quality.
