In an effort to boost food accessibility throughout the country, the San Miguel Corporation is leveraging the extensive service station network of Petron Corporation in order to sell farm fresh produce. With over 370 gas stations in Metro Manila, SMC said that the selling of fresh produce in high-density areas means that consumers will no longer have to travel far from their locations.
“Petron’s major stations will become a lifeline for farmers in the province struggling to find a way to sell their fresh farm harvest. With this program, we are able to help them sustain their livelihood in this time of crisis. At the same time, we’re also making available fresh fruits and vegetables to people in Metro Manila to complement the products we offer,” said SMC president and COO Ramon S. Ang.
To date, 30 stations have been selected for the company's efforts to bring fresh vegetables and other produce to communities. In the future, however, SMC plans to have 60 more gas stations selling farmers' produce.
“We have 370 gas stations throughout Metro Manila. Their locations are strategic—near main roads in high-density areas. By making essential food products available there, there would be less need for people to commute or travel far and line up for hours in markets,” added Ang.
As mentioned earlier, 30 stations now serve as sites for reefer vans with rolling San Miguel stores. Each van is loaded up with frozen poultry products, fresh and processed meat, and ready-to-eat goods. Meanwhile, six Petron Treats convenience stores now serve as pick-up points for products ordered via SMC’s new online ordering system.
