"The week before Easter, the first Polish asparagus from plantations in western Poland hit the shelves, inaugurating the season. However, the cooler temperatures recorded last week slowed down the crop's growth," said Marian Jakobsze, president of the Polish Association of Asparagus Producers, in an interview to Sadyogrody.
At the moment, the first batches of asparagus are being sold for PLN 22-25 per kilo (4.84 to 5.49 Euro). They come from plantations covered with double foil. Thanks to the mild winter, this year's asparagus season kicked off in the first half of April (similarly to last year).
The asparagus season promises to be very good. According to the estimates of the Polish Association of Asparagus Producers, the domestic asparagus production will oscillate between 8 and 10 thousand tons. The total acreage covers about 2 thousand hectares.
