The 2019/20 Spanish citrus campaign will end earlier than normal due to the significant increase in demand caused by the health crisis and the lower performance recorded in Andalusian farms.
The latest report by the Price Observatory of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Sustainable Development indicates that the campaign is currently on the final stretch of marketing the latest citrus varieties. Prices continue to rise and have had a positive trend in recent weeks due to the current market situation and to the increase in the marketed volume of the later varieties of citrus fruit, which have a higher market value.
During the first weeks of April, there was a 6% increase in prices in the field and a 3% increase in the average value of citrus at the exit of the handling center.
The report also states that, at present, the rate of collection or entry of fruit in warehouses does not follow the dynamics of demand, as the market continues to be slow due to the mobility problems workers are facing in the fields, worker absenteeism in fields and warehouses, the difficulties in accessing farms due to the latest rainfall, or the slowdown in transport at border points, among other issues.
