40% drop in production

First cherries available on the Italian markets

"Early Lory cherries are reaching the domestic market for the 2020 campaign. Fruits are bright red, boasting excellent quality and exceptional Brix levels. Most of them have reached markets in Lombardy and the Veneto," explains Antonio Guglielmi, owner of Naturaviva, a company from Bisceglie (BAT) that commercializes produce via the Agritalia PO.

"We own one hectare of greenhouse cherries plus eight hectares of traditional orchards that will be harvested starting in early May. Supply this year is limited, as much of the produce was damaged by frost in late March and early April. We will have 40% less fruit. Temperatures were very high during blossoming, then they dropped by over 12°C. We managed to salvage the early produce thanks to Retilplast protections."

"The weather has not only caused a drop in production, but it also made us lose the 15-day advance we were expecting. The cherry campaign used to start around April 10th. At the moment, despite the pandemic, sales seem to be normal. We are still making few deliveries per store, but I have to say consumption is already lively."
