Dutch ginger importer, BC Lifestyle, gives 15,000 face masks to local health departments

“As long as the coronavirus remains, people will keep buying ginger”

The demand for ginger is currently sky-high. “Particularly supermarkets keep asking for ginger. It is crazy,” says Paul Yin of BC Lifestyle, in the Netherlands. “People keep buying it because it is healthy. With these prices, markets like Eastern Europe usually do not compete. But now, they keep buying. Since last week, we even saw a high demand developing from Russia. I expect that as long as the coronavirus remains, people will keep buying ginger,”

At the same time, ginger’s availability is limited. “China was locked down last month. This caused problems in sending containers from there. There were also concerns on the import side. These two reasons are why there is an unstable supply. We are receiving our regular volumes. But due to the extreme demand, our stocks are lower. And there are limited alternatives. Some young ginger is coming in via airfreight from Brazil. That is, however, not enough to supplement the shortages.”

Paul hopes the prices will remain stable. “The prices are extremely high. But, at these prices, people can keep eating ginger. If prices were to rise any more, it becomes difficult.”

This week, BC Lifestyle has organized 15,000 faces masks. These come from the strategic supplier in China, Shenzhou Youan Food. These will be donated to their local health department. These will help in the fight against this novel strain of the coronavirus. The first 7,500 pieces were given to the Gooi and Vecht Municipal Health Department yesterday, 8 April. The remaining 7,500 pieces are destined for the Rotterdam Health Department.
