Marcel Verdellen, Satori Holland:

"People who have ginger available are set"

There have been major shortages on the ginger market for weeks. "The situation is straightforward," says Marcel Verdellen of Satori Holland from Venlo, the Netherlands. "China has been in lockdown for weeks. They are now slowly lifting it. Peru is out of season. And Brazil is expecting its first dried ginger only in July. There are problems in Thailand too. Those are due to the drought. So, harvests are disappointing there. This all results in meager supply and historically high prices."

The current prices are at about €60-65 for 12,5kg. "If you have access to ginger, you are set. But, almost no-one does. The supply and demand game has pushed up prices. Flying it in is not even an option. There is hardly any air freight available. Besides that, this price will need to be added to the already high prices."

"China usually starts its new harvest in January/February. That means there is now a gap. I also expect we will be flooded with ginger in a few weeks. This is because life in China is now slowly resuming. But, until then, the ginger market will stay hot. We can currently see the same situation with, for example, sweet potatoes. But with other products like limes, demand has practically stopped," concludes Marcel.
