Citrus growers from Veracruz stop harvesting limes due to the coronavirus

Citrus growers in the Mexican municipality of Martínez de la Torre, in the state of Veracruz, have temporarily halted the lime harvest due to the consequences of the spread of COVID-19 both in Mexico and in one of its main importers, the United States.

According to Alberto Blasco, a citrus producer, this situation is worrying not only for the citrus sector but for the population in general, as lime is one of the main economic engines of this entire area.

He said that some packers were ceasing to export citrus to their destinations and that the product was being paid poorly, so citrus producers had decided not to cut it.

He also said that, if this situation continues, the citrus sector and the local economy would be in crisis this year.
