Emile Fellini and Lamberto Giovanardi from Fellini Patrizio discuss the current market situation and report that lettuce, fennel, beet, chicory and radicchio are available and have prices within the norm.
"The media report the high prices of cauliflowers or zucchini, but people do not realize that the former are a winter product for which the season is ending and the latter do not grow when temperatures are low, meaning yields are low. Of course, when a product is lacking, prices go up. Without mentioning all the additional costs due to the period we find ourselves in."
Giovanardi stresses that "retailers we work with are not speculating. It must be considered that transport costs more as often trucks do not travel fully loaded due to the lack of produce."
"Costs are higher also in processing and packaging facilities as we sanitize everything at short intervals. What is more, we staggered shifts to avoid gatherings," adds Fellini.
As if all this was not enough, we have had to deal with frost: "our celery, broad bean and fennel productions were affected here in Romagna, though it will take a few more days to fully assess the damage."
