" Hainan dragon fruit production season delayed, but peak retail season has now arrived"

Dragon fruit is an important fruit in the Chinese market. Some of the dragon fruit in the Chinese market comes from Vietnam and some is domestically grown. The dragon fruits from Hainan have already entered the peak of the sales season. The overall market conditions are quite good.

Mr. Chang Zhongjie of Hainan Natural Fruit Fragrance recently shared his insight in the Chinese dragon fruit market. "This year our dragon fruit did not enter the market until the 20th of February, which is 20 days late in comparison with last year. The main reason for this delay is the relatively low temperature this year, which slowed down the growth of dragon fruit in Hainan. Furthermore, the production volume is smaller than last year and the product quality is not as good. The product variety we produce in our plantation is the Jingdu No. 1. We harvest in several stages and every individual harvest is sold within 7 to 10 days. Market demand is currently very strong and our delivery speed is high."

"The supply volume of dragon fruit from Vietnam is quite large and accounts for most of the dragon fruit currently on the market. The product quality of domestic dragon fruit is not as good as the product quality of Vietnamese dragon fruit, which means that domestic dragon fruit struggles to compete with Vietnamese dragon fruit. However, we are not that worried about the threat of Vietnamese dragon fruit. The flavor of dragon fruit from Hainan is better and the sugar content is higher than Vietnamese dragon fruit. We allow the dragon fruit to grow for a longer period, which results in a more naturally delicious flavor.

"Furthermore, we sell our dragon fruit under our own brand, which helps us guarantee excellent flavor and great product quality. The price of dragon fruit is obviously shaped by the supply volume of Vietnamese dragon fruit, but our sales are still quite smooth. In addition, we have several long-term business partners and much of our harvest has already been sold for 1 yuan [0.14 USD] per 0.5 kg above market price. The large dragon fruit sells for 7-9 yuan [0.99-1.27 USD] per 0.5 kg, while medium dragon fruit sells for 5-7 yuan [0.71-0.99 USD] per 0.5 kg. We sell most of our dragon fruit via fruit chain stores, group buyers, and e-commerce platforms."

In addition to dragon fruit, Mr. Chang Zhongjie also sells lychees. According to him: "we are currently selling Guihua Fragrance lychees. This is an early-season variety. The retail price is more or less the same each year. There are no large fluctuations. The sales season lasts around 15 days. The production season is already over for this year and supply is limited. Furthermore, this is an early-season variety. That is why the price is relatively high. Consumers value the freshness and the consumer experience. We aim our lychees at high-end market consumers and lychee enthusiasts."
