Banana cultivation is an important source of employment and wealth for Mexico's agricultural regions. In the states of Colima, Jalisco, and Michoacan this activity generates more than 50,000 jobs, according to Francisco Hueso, the leader of the Central Pacific Banana Producers' Regional Agricultural Union.
Hueso said that these three states had approximately 15,000 hectares dedicated to the cultivation of this fruit. Michoacan and Colima each have 6,000 planted hectares, and Jalisco has 3,000.
