In February this year, the medlar variety Guardiola, managed by the Spanish company Biogold Network EM, has obtained protection from the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) under registration number 54352.
The company is now granting a six-month period for the regularization of existing orchards.
Ester Llorens Fuster and Raúl Guardiola, developers of this medlar variety
The most remarkable properties of the medlar variety developed by Raúl Guardiola are its high resistance to purple spot, lower susceptibility to tearing, large size, early harvest period and an extraordinary taste.
All these characteristics are very important in the fruit's marketing, but there are also agronomic advantages that contribute to the variety's profitability, such as the fact that less thinning is required than with other varieties.
This has resulted in a great commercial success over the last two seasons, both in terms of prices and in the opening of new markets. The price is twice as high as that of other varieties. Thanks to its appearance and taste, the Guardiola medlar has also aroused the interest of consumers in valuable markets such as Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, where it is hoped that sales will start this season.
