"Chinese cherry sales improve as demand grows"

The cherry is one of the most popular fruits in the Chinese market. Domestic cherries have already entered the market. However, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the cherry sales conditions suffered. Liu Wenpo, chairman of the board of Beijing Xinfadi Runfuyuan Trade Co., Ltd. recently analysed the current conditions in the Chinese cherry market:

"The outbreak of the corona virus is gradually being brought under control and as a result the market is slowly improving. However, the market is still much worse than around this time last year. The current price of domestic cherries is around 110 yuan [15.53 USD] per kg, which is 10%-20% lower than around this time last year. The reason for this development is the outbreak of the corona virus after the Chinese Spring Festival [25 January, 2020] and its impact on the Chinese fruit market. People did not leave their house as much as usual and this affected consumer demand, which in turn slowed down the speed of sales."

When asked about the conditions in cherry production areas this year, Mr. Liu replied: "We had to delay the start of the production season by one week because the COVID-19 pandemic slowed us down. Our cherries have been on the market for a month or so. The spread of COVID-19 has largely been brought under control in China and the market conditions subsequently improved."

"The cherry variety with the most positive market position is the Yi Shu Jia cherry. That product variety has been crafted over a period of 30 years to become a 'green', environment-friendly domestic cherry with a stable sugar content of more than 20%. Some cherries have a sugar content that reaches as high as 35.1%. This cherry varieties also has the best product quality and the most delicious flavor out of all the cherry varieties we sell. Our production volume expanded by 15% in comparison with last year. The production volume increased because the weather conditions were extremely favorable this year and because we expanded the overall surface area devoted to cherry plantation. Market demand for cherries continues to grow, so we will continue to expand the surface area devoted to cherry plantation."
