Chinese cucumber price showed downward trend after Spring Festival

Recent data from the Beijing Xinfadi Wholesale Agricultural Market shows that the wholesale price of Chinese cucumbers declined in comparison with the same period last year. The main reasons for this development are as follows: the cucumber price was relatively low in autumn last year, and has been low for a while, so the overall surface area devoted to winter cucumber plantation in Liaoning and Shandong declined.

In addition, many greenhouse farmers in Shandong switched from cucumbers to loofah and bitter melon because these product varieties result in greater profit. The overall production volume of cucumbers therefore declined. The price of cucumbers therefore showed a rise in the period leading up to Chinese Spring Festival [25 January, 2020]. Furthermore, the winter cucumbers did not receive enough sunlight and their growth therefore slowed down. The overall production volume declined. However, after Spring Festival the production volume expanded again and the price therefore came down.
